Making energy islands a success!
PRESSEMEDDELELSE FRA BALTIC ENERGY ISLAND:
Branch professionals, politicians, researchers, journalists, and others
working in the field of energy transition worldwide gathered at
Bornholm for Baltic Energy Island Summit
The Danish Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities, Lars Aagaard, is among nearly 200 people from 12
different countries gathered at Bornholm Tuesday 7th of May to discuss and develop the future of energy
islands.
“I appreciate the commitment shown by Bornholm and Baltic Energy Island in taking responsibility
for the green transition. Therefore, I greatly look forward to participating in the Baltic Energy
Island Summit today and meeting with stakeholders. Developing the offshore potential and
collaborating on the transmission of green electricity to European consumers, households and
industries is a truly European project that can deliver widespread benefits including greater energy
independence, security of supply, meeting climate goals, and a significant number of green jobs",
the Minister says.
It is the second time the summit is being held on Bornholm, with Energy Island Bornholm as the starting
point for a more general discussion about how to make energy islands a success.
CEO of Baltic Energy Island, Søren Møller Christensen, is pleased with the large turnout: “The Baltic Energy
Island Summit has become an annual recurring event bringing together companies, universities, and
politicians for dialogue on energy islands. Therefore, I’m happy to see so many people from a broad range of
countries and professional backgrounds.
He is particularly looking forward to discussing two things: “Innovation and local value creation are, in my
view, prerequisites for success. Innovation, because energy islands is a new concept that requires many
people to work together, to find the right solutions. Local value creation, because local support requires that
the, often, rural areas that are to accommodate the green transition need to experience that it adds local
value to be the power plants of the future.”
To gather the stakeholders, Baltic Energy Island today launches the Energy Island Forum; an open
international network with the ambition to bring together all relevant stakeholders in a joint effort, to
make energy islands a success. During autumn this year they will publish the first R&D-roadmap for energy
islands setting the agenda for future innovation projects.
The international focus is also present in the collaboration Baltic Energy Islands Connect, that includes the
future energy islands of the Baltic Sea Gotland, Åland and Bornholm – and from today also Saaremaa. This
morning the mayor of Saaremaa, Mikk Tuisk together with Bornholms mayor, Jacob Trøst, Ålands minister
of Infrastructure and Climate, Camilla Gunell and Gotlands coordinator for Energy Island Gotland, Lars
Thomsson have signed a letter of intent framing future collaboration.
Baltic Energy Island Summit is in Rønne today from 10 – 17.
